It is a biennial plant, which is generally grown on an annual cycle. The plants of the dulce variety have a thin and straight root system while the rapaceum variety has an enlarged root. The leaves of the dulce variety have a petiole crossed by veins along its entire length and are fleshy. It flowers in June-July; the inflorescence is umbrella-shaped and white-green in colour. The fruit is of the diacheno type, meaning there are seeds inside.
