The walnut is a tree that can reach 20-25 meters in height and whose diameter, at the base, can measure from 1 to 2 meters.
Its bark is silvery-grey and smooth on young stems; longitudinal cracks appear very late. The branches are dark red when young, and then, as they grow, become silvery-grey like the trunk.
The stem is straight, vigorous and is divided into a few main branches that form the wide, rounded and dense foliage.
The fruit is a drupe that opens when ripe, oval, 3-4 cm long and slightly less wide; it is made up of a pericarp commonly called husk, yellow-greenish, which detaches upon drying. The endocarp is a woody shell with two irregularly furrowed valves. Inside the endocarp there is the seed or kernel divided by false septa.
The seeds ripen between September and October.
