Chili pepper belongs to the solanaceous family and the Capsicum family. Brought in the holds of the caravels of Columbus, it arrived in the Old Continent in the early years of the 16th century from the Americas where it was called Chili, name that we still use today. For a very long time, it was the only spice used by the Indians native of Chile and Mexico. For its flavouring properties, it was soon largely used in the kitchens of all Mediterranean and tropical countries where is still on the table on daily basis.
